CANVAS is city’s sixth pot shop and is female owned

East Toronto’s Greektown neighbourhood has its legal first pot shop.
On Monday, Dec. 16, CANVAS — Toronto’s sixth cannabis store — opened its doors at 730 Danforth Ave., just east of Pape Avenue.
It is the city’s first female-owned outlet.
Helene Vassos, who worked for 30 years in the non-profit health-care sector, is CANVAS’ sole owner. Previously, she held executive roles at Prostate Cancer Canada and the ALS Society of Canada.
“I saw this amazing new industry unfolding in front of me and I realized, ‘wow, this is an incredible opportunity for me to help lead the way in this evolving industry, as both a women and a small-business owner,’ and all of a sudden I had this new-found energy, excitement and commitment,” she said in a Dec. 12 release.
Vassos also grew up in the Danforth area and said she has a “deep connection to the neighbourhood.”
“Because of that, I took great care and attention to build a store that fits with the existing culture,” she said.
